I’m Still in Awe: Dalmatian

I never thought I’d be writing this — but I finally found him. A Dalmatian. In rescue. I honestly couldn’t believe it when I found out. Dalmatians have been at the top of my dream list for years. I’ve had the joy of sharing my life with so many amazing breeds: Samoyeds, Australian Shepherds, Malinois, Rottweilers, Chows, Poodles… and yes, of course, I love all animals. But those breeds hold a special place in my heart.

After doing tons of research, I knew Dalmatians are not for the faint of heart. They are high energy, strong-willed, and they thrive on structure, rules, and engagement. I once fostered a Dalmatian and completely fell in love with him. I renamed him Valentine because of how sweet and affectionate he was — a total lovebug in a spotted coat.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago — a friend showed me a picture of a Dalmatian in rescue. As soon as I saw his face, I felt it. You know that feeling when you just know? I met him shortly after and couldn’t believe how perfect he seemed. I learned his previous family had surrendered him, likely without fully understanding the needs of the breed. Dalmatians aren’t just pretty coats — they need outlets for all that drive, and families who are ready for the ride.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this boy. Days passed and he stayed in my mind and heart. So I made the drive — two hours each way — to bring him home.

I was in complete awe the whole ride. How was this real?

When we got home, he drank some water, had a snack, and we went on our first walk together. That’s when I discovered: he loves grass. I mean, lives for it. He rolls, sniffs, wiggles, and beams with happiness every time he touches it.

And he’s amazing with dogs, cats, and people. A true social butterfly with a heart of gold.

We’ve already gone on river hikes, splashed around, and shared quiet moments where he just melts into me. He’s sweet, kind, outdoorsy, and so eager to be near his humans. It’s only been a week, but it feels like we’ve known each other forever. My other pups welcomed him into our little pack, and he fits right in. He’s home.

This boy… he’s my soul dog. My best friend. My protector. I’m still in shock that he’s mine.

Have You Ever Met Your Soul Dog?

I’d love to hear your story. Have you ever had a moment like this — where you just knew a dog was meant to be yours? Do you have experience with high-energy breeds like Dalmatians? Let’s connect. Drop a comment below, share your rescue stories, your dog quirks, or even a pic of your pup!

Because those of us with furry soulmates know — they don’t just change our lives. They complete them.

Grape Hyacinths: The Gift That Keeps on Growing

One of the best parts of being part of a garden community is how plants have a way of connecting people. Sometimes it’s through a shared cutting, a few saved seeds — or, in my case, a big bag of grape
